HC Deb 28 September 1931 vol 257 cc31-2
53. Mr. L'ESTRANGE MALONE

asked the Minister of Labour what arrangements are being made to increase the staffs of relieving officers and the clerical staffs to the public assistance committees in order to deal with the claims of those, estimated at about 900,000, to whom a needs teat for transitional unemployment benefit is to be applied?

Mr. GRAY

Additional staff for this purpose will be engaged where necessary

Mr. GRAY

The custom of the Government has not been to train men whom they have no reasonable opportunity of placing. There has been an increasing difficulty in making placements, and the present training centres are now running at a reduced strength. We are consolidating those people who are being trained in a smaller number of centres.
