HC Deb 23 September 1931 vol 256 cc1648-9
54. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is prepared, in the interest of public economy, to consider the suggestion that the termination of summer time should be postponed for a period of a month or six weeks?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir Herbert Samuel)

The duration of summer time is fixed by Statute. It will end this year on 3rd October. As the period of daylight will then be less than 12 hours and will be rapidly diminishing, there would be no advantages and, on the contrary, many disadvantages in adopting the hon. Member's suggestion, apart from the Impracticability of passing the necessary legislation in present circumstances.

Mr. O' C0NNOR

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what would be the saving if the hon. Member's questions were limited to one day?
