HC Deb 23 September 1931 vol 256 cc1647-8
51. Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the need for individual and national economy, he will consider introducing legislation to limit the expenditure that may be incurred by candidates at parliamentary elections to 2d. and 3d. per head in burgh and county constituencies, respectively?

Mr. S. BALDWIN

I am afraid that my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion is not practicable.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Is not my right hon. Friend aware that such a suggestion would have practically the unanimous support of the House of Commons?

Mr. BALDWIN

That is exactly what I am in doubt about. All the experience of the last three years has shown that the House of Commons can never agree on the amount which should be paid by candidates at elections.
