HC Deb 23 September 1931 vol 256 cc1625-6
14. Mr. O. LEWIS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what effect the grant of £25,000 for locust relief in the Kavirondo country is having upon the number of natives who come forward from that district for work in Kenya generally?

Mr. THOMAS

I have no information to show what effect the grants made for locust relief which have been applied in the Kavirondo country are having upon the supply of native labour from that area, beyond a recent statement from the Governor that in the South Kavirondo district a large number of natives require relief, one reason being that they were unable to find sufficient employment as labourers.

Mr. LEWIS

Is there no record of the movement of labour from this district to Kenya?

Mr. THOMAS

If the hon. Member will put down that question, I will ascertain. I could not say off-hand.
