HC Deb 10 September 1931 vol 256 cc286-7
32. Sir CHARLES CAYZER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the additional inquiry ordered by Marshal Chiang-kai-Shek, into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Mr. John Thorburn at Soochow, has brought to light any fresh information as to his whereabouts or fate?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Captain Eden)

The new inquiry ordered by the President of the Chinese Government has not yet been completed. The Chinese Government have informed His Majesty's representative that it is progressing satisfactorily, and that a report may be expected before the end of the month. -Sir Miles Lampson has pressed the Chinese Minister for Foreign Affairs to obtain this report at the earliest possible moment, and has made known his disappointment at such continued delay on the part of the Chinese authorities.
