HC Deb 26 November 1931 vol 260 cc507-8
76. Mr. SALT

asked the Minister of Health the number of houses in England and Wales which were estimated to be dealt with under slum clearance schemes as part of the Housing Act, 1930, during the five-year period commencing 1st January, 1931; and how many houses have been demolished under this scheme up to 31st October last or the latest available date?

Sir H. YOUNG

The estimate made by the larger urban authorities provided for the demolition of 57,000 such houses. The number actually demolished up to 30th September last was 201.

77. Mr. SALT

asked the Minister of Health whether be contemplates any action to assist local authorities in accelerating programmes of slum clearance submitted to the Ministry of Health last December?

Sir H. YOUNG

I am not clear what kind of action my hon. Friend has in mind and I shall be glad to consider any concrete suggestions which he may wish to make.

Mr. HARRIS

Can the right hon. Gentleman state what progress is being made under this Act?

Sir H. YOUNG

Of course, my hon. Friend will consider that, before any house can be demolished alternative accommodation has to be found.
