HC Deb 18 November 1931 vol 259 cc848-9
Mr. ATTLEE

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the growing importance of the rent question, he will in making arrangements for the remaining business to be taken before the Adjournment, provide time for a discussion of the report of the Rent Committee?

The PRIME MINISTER

As stated in answer to recent questions, the future of the Rent Restrictions Acts, and any Amendments of the Acts, will be considered by the Government in the light of the report of the Departmental Committee which was recently issued. In the meantime it is proposed to prolong the operation of the present Acts by means of the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill, and in the circumstances I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by a discussion before the Adjournment.

Mr. ATTLEE

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware of the tenour of the report of the Rents Committee, pointing out the very heavy burden of rents, and, in view of the cuts in wages and the reduction in unemployment benefit, does he realise that here is a matter of urgency that should be dealt with before the Christmas Recess?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is some time since I read the report of the Committee, and I certainly am under the impression that its report was opposed to it, hut the change in circumstances that has taken place since is under the consideration of the Department concerned.
