HC Deb 21 May 1931 vol 252 cc2202-3
70. Mr. BRACKEN

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the small earnings of persons employed in Indian cotton mills and other industries benefited by tariffs, he will take steps to ensure a fair standard of wages and conditions in those industries in India?

Mr. BENN

The report of the Royal Commission on Labour in India will probably be available towards the end of June. I shall then be in a better position to consider whether I can usefully address the Government of India on the matters referred to by the hon. Member.

Mr. BRACKEN

Surely as a matter of principle the right hon. Gentleman will support that proposal?

Sir W. BRASS

Will the right hon. Gentleman say, if he does find that these standards are very low, that he will communicate with the Government of India on the subject?
