HC Deb 21 May 1931 vol 252 cc2198-9
57. Mr. McSHANE

asked the President of the Board of Trade the amount of coffee, balata, timber and petroleum imported into this country from Venezuela in the year 1930; and whether he has any information to give with regard to the labour conditions under which some of these commodities are produced?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

During the year 1930, the total imports of the specified commodities into the United Kingdom consigned from Venezuela were as follow: Coffee, 4 cwt.; gutta percha and balata, 6,459 centals; wood and timber, 91,744 cubic feet; and crude petroleum 72,322,000 gallons. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. McSHANE

Has the right hon. Gentleman received any complaints with regard to conditions of labour?

Mr. GRAHAM

No, and in any event that would be a matter for another Department. I am concerned merely with the imports.
