HC Deb 14 May 1931 vol 252 c1345
21. Major DESPENCER - ROBERTSON

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisons have been closed in England during the last two years; and what provision is made for the staffs who are affected thereby?

Mr. CLYNES

Three prisons have been closed in the last two years. The members of the established staff have been transferred to other prisons. Every year there are numerous vacancies resulting from the retirement of men of pensionable age, and the established officers from the closed prisons have been absorbed into these vacancies.
