HC Deb 05 May 1931 vol 252 cc204-5
52. Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Economy Committee will be asked to present interim reports; and, if so, when the first interim report may be expected?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

My right hon. Friend thinks the committee must be allowed to make further progress with their task before he can consider with them whether the presentation of interim reports is desirable.

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer say when he will come to a conclusion with regard to this matter?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

No. As I have said, my right hon. Friend thinks that some further progress must be made before he can express an opinion.

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Is not early action necessary in order to achieve any economy during the present financial year?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

If earlier action were necessary, steps would be taken to get an earlier report, but, as to whether or not an interim report is desirable, that is a matter which my right hon. Friend has not yet considered.

Mr. C. WILLIAMS

May we expect a full report before the Summer Recess.

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

I could not say.
