HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 cc31-2
65. Rear-Admiral SUETER

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will approach the British official directors of the Suez Canal Company with a view to securing that in future the value of the orders placed with British firms by the company for materials required by the Suez Canal shall be commensurate with the holding of Suez Canal shares by the British Government?

67. Lieut. - Colonel Sir LAMBERT WARD

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will approach the British official directors of the Suez Canal Company with a view to sending him in future specifications, in the English language as well as in the French language, for all stores to be purchased by the Suez Canal Company and arranging that specifications should be issued well in advance of the dates upon which tenders and materials have to be delivered, so that British firms are not ruled out owing to insufficient time being allowed?

Mr. GILLETT

Steps are being taken to obtain full information of the present practice of the Suez Canal Company in regard to the placing of orders for stores and the lake, and the position will then be duly considered.

Mr. A. M. SAMUEL

Is the hon. Member aware that the form and terms in which these tenders are issued prevent any British firms getting these orders?

Mr. GILLETT

All these points will be considered when we get the information.
