HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 c31
64. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the names of those countries which have placed an embargo on the import of Russian goods, giving details and reasons where possible?

Mr. GILLETT

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to a similar question by the hon. and gallant Member for North Midlothian (Major Colville) on 18th March, of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. SMITHERS

May I ask whether the Board of Trade proposes to recommend similar action to that which has been taken by other countries to prohibit the importation of Russian goods?

Mr. GILLETT

I cannot give any such undertaking.

Major COLVILLE

Is it not the case that since the answer to which the hon. Member has referred was given, this further action has been taken by two countries?

66. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the details of any restrictions placed by Austria upon the importation of Soviet poultry and eggs?

Mr. GILLETT

I am not aware of any special restrictions on the importation of Soviet poultry and eggs into Austria. An order, it is true, was recently issued by the Austrian Government forbidding the import of Soviet eggs, based on a decree of 1909 which authorised such action in case of any danger of chicken plague; but this order was cancelled on 18th April.
