HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 c37
83. Sir GEORGE HAMILTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that turpentine enters largely into the manufacture of synthetic camphor; and, in view of the extent of foreign competition in synthetic camphor, will he consider exempting turpentine from the proposed new tax and the old 4d. tax when used for this purpose?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

I would ask the hon. Gentleman to await the discussion on the Budget Resolution which, I understand, will take place to-morrow.

Sir G. HAMILTON

Cannot the hon. Gentleman tell us whether in that discussion any consideration will be given to a new and struggling industry in this country, in the form suggested in the question?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

There is an Amendment down to the Budget Resolution to-morrow, and I think it is better that the discussion of the matter should take place then.
