HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 cc7-8
9. Mr. BRACKEN

asked the Secretary of State for India whether His Majesty's Government, before issuing invitations to further sessions of the India Round Table Conference or any of its committees, will make such invitations conditional upon the acceptance of the principle of the safeguards outlined at the sessions of the Conference held at St. James s Palace?

Mr. BENN

The basis of resumed discussions will be found stated in paragraph 2 of the White Paper issued on 5th March.

Mr. BRACKEN

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that his answer has no connection whatever with my question unless it can be interpreted to mean that he has had an assurance from Mr. Gandhi that he accepts the principle of the safeguards laid down at the Round Table Conference?

Mr. BENN

The paragraph to which I referred is the paragraph to which Lord Irwin and Mr. Gandhi were parties.

Mr. BRACKEN

I ask the right hon. Gentleman to give me an answer. He has given me a most evasive answer and referred me to a Paper which really gives me no assurance whatever. Has he had an assurance from Mr. Gandhi that he accepts the principle of the safeguards laid down at the Round Table Conference?

Mr. BENN

I refer the hon. Member to the notes of conversations between Lord Irwin and Mr. Gandhi.

Mr. BRACKEN

In view of the utterly evasive nature of the right hon. Gentleman's reply, I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment.
