HC Deb 12 March 1931 vol 249 c1387
85. Mr. HANNON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is now in a position to state whether the Argentine Government have yet decided to introduce an emergency tariff; and if any reply has been received to the representations which he has made to the Argentine Government?

The SECRETARY for MINES (Mr. Shinwell)

Particulars of increases in the import duties on certain kinds of goods and of the imposition of duties upon other goods hitherto admitted free into the Argentine were published in the "Board of Trade Journal" of the 5th March. No representations in regard to these measures have yet been made to the Argentine Government, but the position is being carefully watched.

Mr. HANNON

I did not ask the hon. Member about past tariffs; I am asking if he has any information about a proposed emergency tariff in future, and what representations have been made?

Mr. SHINWELL

There is a great, deal of information at the disposal of the Department, but the matter is one of singular difficulty; I can assure my hon. Friend that the interests of British trade will be protected.
