HC Deb 09 March 1931 vol 249 cc803-4
61. Mr. BROCKWAY

(for Mr. SORENSEN) asked the Postmaster-General whether he has considered the resolutions passed by various town councils urging that local amenities should be preserved by Post Office wires being placed underground in urban districts; and what he intends to do in the matter?

Mr. ATTLEE

I have received a number of resolutions in the sense indicated. Every endeavour is made to interfere as little as possible with amenities when overhead lines are constructed, and underground lines are provided wherever it is possible to justify the outlay. But in a proportion of cases the cost of underground plant would be prohibitive and overhead plant then represents the only method of providing service on an economic basis.

Mr. BROCKWAY

Has the hon. Member in particular received communications from the councils in Leyton and Walthamstow on this matter, and will he consider the requests that they have made?

Mr. ATTLEE

I cannot charge my memory as to whether I have received those particular communications.

Mr. BROCKWAY

Will the right hon. Gentleman look into the matter?

Mr. ATTLEE

Certainly.
