HC Deb 05 March 1931 vol 249 c583
44. Mr. FREEMAN

asked the Minister of Health the total number of deaths of children under two years from effects connected with vaccination and the total number who have died from smallpox during the last 20 years?

Mr. GREENWOOD

The total numbers of deaths of children under two years of age in England and Wales which were registered in the years 1911–30 and classified to vaccinia and smallpox respectively were 57 and 64. In addition, there were 99 deaths in regard to which reference was made to vaccination either on the medical certificate or in reply to inquiry from the Registrar-General.

Mr. FREEMAN

In view of the fact that there appears to be a much larger number of people killed by vaccination than by smallpox, will the right hon. Gentleman proceed with his inquiries with the object of amending the vaccination laws?

Dr. HASTINGS

May I also ask my right hon. Friend whether the protection by vaccination does not last for more than two years?
