HC Deb 05 March 1931 vol 249 cc560-1
16. Mr. SORENSEN

asked the Minister of Labour whether any steps are likely to be taken in the near future to provide shelter during inclement weather for applicants at the Leyton Employment Exchange?

Miss BONDFIELD

The provision of shelters, apart from the usual waiting rooms at Employment Exchanges, does not at present form part of the building programme. I have made inquiry and find that such overcrowding as has occurred at Leyton has been due to claimants arriving before their scheduled times.

Mr. SORENSEN

Is the right hon. Lady aware that almost at any time of the week one can see numbers of the unemployed standing in the open air, exposed to rain and fog?

Miss BONDFIELD

Yes, but if those people got there at the scheduled time they would not have to stand about.
