HC Deb 29 June 1931 vol 254 cc867-8
12. Mr. REMER

asked the Secretary of State for India if he can make any statement as to the circumstances under which the police superintendent of Vizagapatam was reprimanded on the ground that he had a large reserve police force at that place; if he can state the cir— cumstances under which the reserves were removed from Vizagapatam; if he can give a report as to the disturbances which have recently taken place in this district; how many people were killed and injured in those disturbances; and, in view of the bravery of the small police force who defended their post, will he undertake that they are suitably rewarded?

Mr. BENN

I have no information of the occurrences to which the hon. Member refers. Perhaps he would be so good as to provide me with more precise particulars including the date of the incident on which his question is based.

Mr. REMER

Has the right hon. Gentleman made any inquiries about this matter?

Mr. BENN

I have answered that question. I have no information. If the hon. Member will give me something more specific, I will make inquiries. Cables are expensive. It may cost £20 for an inquiry into an alleged occurrence which never took place.

Mr. REMER

Is it not the case that hon. Members are responsible for statements in their questions?

Mr. BENN

In that case, perhaps the hon. Member will give me the date.
