HC Deb 29 June 1931 vol 254 c889
54. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will lay it down as indispensable in the granting of a visa to a foreign subject proposing to visit this country that he or she has not been associated with the international revolutionary activities of the Third International?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Short)

No, Sir. My right hon. Friend prefers in this matter to follow the example of his predecessors and to retain a discretion to deal with individual cases on their merits.

Commander BELLAIRS

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that we have had a great deal more experience of the Third International since the Conservatives were in office?

Mr. THORNE

Is it not much better to allow any of our comrades of the Third International to visit this country, so that they can see the scientific and common-sense way in which we carry on our business?
