HC Deb 22 June 1931 vol 254 cc39-40
78. Mr. DAY

asked the Postmaster- General whether he can give particulars of the new proposed zone centres and blocks of zone calls that are being considered by the Post Office for their telephone installation?

Mr. ATTLEE

The question is presumably based on recent references in the Press to inquiries which my Department is making as to the possibility of developing the use of the telephone as an aid to salesmanship. The matter has not yet reached the stage of a definite scheme.

Mr. DAY

Can the Postmaster-General say whether there has been any personal investigations?

Mr. ATTLEE

I have already informed the hon. Member that the matter has not yet reached the stage of a definite scheme.

82. Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Postmaster-General what steps his Department is at present taking with a view to accelerating the rate of development of the telephone service in this country?

Mr. ATTLEE

I have engaged a firm of experts to make a survey of the method of canvassing subscribers. I have also appointed a small advisory council of experts to advise me on the best method of publicity to employ in attracting new subscribers and increasing the use of the telephone.

Captain CROOKSHANK

Will this council present an interim report.
