asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can now make a further statement as to the condition of affairs in China; whether the control of Customs still remains in the possession of the Canton Government; and whether he proposes to consult the other Powers on the present situation?

Mr. A. HENDERSON

There has been no material change in the general situation in China since my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Central Southwark (Mr. Day) on 3rd June. The position regarding the Customs does not appear to have altered since I answered the right hon. Gentleman's question of 15th June. I do not consider that the present situation is such as to require formal consultation with the other Powers.
