HC Deb 22 July 1931 vol 255 cc1485-6
58. Mr. MARCUS

asked the Postmaster-General when he will be able to make public his decision as to the advisability of making certain reductions in telephone charges?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Attlee)

I am glad to be able to announce the following reductions in telephone charges, with effect as from the 1st October next:

Residence lines.

Internal extensions without intercommunication. Reduced from 6s. to 4s. a quarter.

Internal extensions with intercommunication. Reduced from 9s. to 8s. a quarter.

Business lines.

Non-Intercommunicating Extensions. Reduced from 6s. to 5s. a quarter.

Large installations.

Instead of the present flat rate of 9s. a quarter, the following scale will apply:

First 50 extensions 9s. a quarter per extension.

Next 150 extensions 8s. a quarter per extension.

Next 200 extensions 7s. a quarter per extension.

Additional extensions (beyond 400) 6s. a quarter per extension.

Substantial reductions will also be made in the charges for long-distance private telephone circuits.

I propose also to modify the conditions of telephone agreements so as to allow notice of termination to become effective three months after the date on which it is given.

Mr. DAY

Can my hon. Friend say whether he proposes also to make any variation in the telephone charges to America?

Mr. ATTLEE

I have informed the House of all the changes I propose to make at the present time.
