HC Deb 22 July 1931 vol 255 cc1488-9
65. Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary whether he has any records and can state the number of cases in which corporal punishment has been administered to persons under sentence of the courts for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?

Mr. SHORT

Figures showing the number of persons on whom sentences of corporal punishment have been passed by courts are included in the volumes of criminal statistics for England and Wales published annually. The returns for 1930 have not yet been tabulated and the latest available are those for 1929. During that year such sentences were passed on 18 persons by Courts of Assize or Quarter Sessions, and on 180 persons by courts of summary jurisdiction. No figures are available showing the number of these sentences which were actually carried out.

Mr. DAY

Can the Under-Secretary say whether these sentences are carried out at one time or whether there is any postponement of them?

Mr. SHORT

I must ask for notice of that question.
