HC Deb 22 July 1931 vol 255 cc1490-3
Mr. STANLEY BALDWIN

I desire to ask the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs two questions. First, what business he proposes to take to-night? The second is a question which I should ask the Leader of the House, but perhaps the Secretary of State will consult with the Leader of the House and give me an answer to-morrow. It is with reference to a question I asked this day week about the Motion regarding the allowances of Members of Parliament; whether the Prime Minister was in a position to 3ay when that Motion could be taken. I have been looking at the dates, and it seems to me that Friday might be a convenient day, but I should be glad if the right hon. Gentleman will consult the Leader of the House and give me an answer to-morrow.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

This Friday or next?

Mr. BALDWIN

Next Friday.

The SECRETARY of STATE for DOMINION AFFAIRS (Mr. J. H. Thomas)

With reference to the second question of the right hon. Gentleman, I anticipate that an answer will be made to-morrow. With regard to his first question, it is proposed to-night to dispose of the items on the Order Paper down to and including the Report of Army and Air Expenditure, 1929, with the exception of the Committee stage of the Public Works Loan Bill. In view of the representations made with regard to that Bill, it has been decided to put it down for Friday next, after the business already announced for that day.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

With reference to the private Member's Motion referred to by the right hon. Member for Bewdley (Mr. S. Baldwin),

I presume that that is not going to squeeze out important business for which the country is waiting, and also that it will not entail the House sitting very late in order to get through other business?

Mr. THOMAS

All these factors will be kept in mind, and I can only say in the words of a famous phrase, "Wait and see."

Sir K. WOOD

It is rather late to make that suggestion.

Motion made, and Question put, That, notwithstanding anything in Standing Order No. 15, Business other than the Business of Supply may be taken this day before Eleven of the clock, and that the Proceedings on Government Business other than the Business of Supply be exempted, at this day's sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[Mr. Thomas.]

The House divided: Ayes, 228; Noes, 110.
