HC Deb 20 July 1931 vol 255 cc1043-4
16. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether it is now definitely known if Mr. Gandhi is to visit this country to take part in the forthcoming Round Table Conference on India?

19. Mr. DOUGLAS HACKING

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can make any statement to the House in regard to the representation of Congress at the Round Table Conference, as a result of the recent conversations between the Viceroy and Mr. Gandhi?

20. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether the composition of the federal structure committee of the resumed Round Table Conference has now been settled; and whether the Anglo-Indian and domiciled European communities will be represented?

Mr. BENN

The list of those invited to the resumed sittings of the Federal Structure Committee of the Conference will be published to-morrow morning. Copies of the list will be available in the Vote Office this evening.

Mr. DAY

Can my right hon. Friend say whether the Government have been requested to or have made any special arrangements for Mr. Gandhi's visit?

Mr. BENN

Mr. Gandhi will receive an invitation to attend the meetings of the committee.

Mr. HACKING

Were the conversations between the Viceroy and Mr. Gandhi confined to this question of Mr. Gandhi's visit to England?

Mr. BENN

I cannot make any statement as to those conversations.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is is not possible to give the House this information, in the first place; and, secondly, may I ask whether the Anglo-Indian and domiciled European communities will be represented at the Conference—I do not ask for the names now?

Mr. BENN

I am naturally anxious that the House should have the information at the earliest possible moment, and that is why I am having the Papers put in the Vote Office; but we desire simultaneity of publication here and in India, and that is why they will not be printed until to-morrow.
