HC Deb 28 January 1931 vol 247 c958
36. Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the cause of the present hold-up of cocoa in the Gold Coast and who has organised the propaganda in support of this hold-up; and whether the Secretary of State for the Colonies has authorised the Governor of the Colony to point out the serious consequences to native producers of continuing this hold-up?

Dr. SHIELS

The recent hold-up of cocoa in the Gold Coast was due to dissatisfaction on the part of the growers with the prevailing market prices. The propaganda in support of the hold-up was organised by the Gold Coast Cocoa Growers' Federation, of which Mr. A. J. Ocansey was the secretary. The Governor pointed out to the African producers the very serious consequences of continuing the hold-up, and he now reports that, as a result of a conference between representatives of the merchants, growers, and Government, stocks of cocoa are being released.
