HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 cc576-7
8. Mr. FREEMAN

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has received any information that any steps have been taken by the National Congress, or whether the Government contemplates taking any action, to secure an understanding for the calling off of the civil disobedience campaign and the release of political prisoners?

Mr. BENN

To allow full facilities for discussion of the Prime Minister's statement at the concluding session of the Round Table Conference, it has been decided to release unconditionally Mr. Gandhi and the permanent and officiating members of the All India Congress Working Committee who have held office since 1st January, 1930.

Mr. HANNON

Is any condition attached to the release of the prisoners?

Mr. BENN

The full announcement was made by the Viceroy yesterday, and I would refer the hon. Member to the terms of it.

Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

Will the right hon. Gentleman let the House know exactly the number of people?

Mr. BENN

So soon as I have the information I shall be glad to give it to the House.

Earl WINTERTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman likely to have it before the conclusion of the Debate to-day?

Mr. BENN

No, Sir.

Mr. AYLES

Is any action contemplated in regard to the other prisoners?

Mr. BENN

I cannot say anything about that.

Mr. FREEMAN

Will the ordinances be repealed at the same time, particularly relating to the Press, in view of the desirability of having our public opinion crystallised on the matter?

Mr. BENN

At this moment I am not able to give any further information than that contained in the Viceroy's statement.
