HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 cc603-4
43. Mr. EDE

asked the Minister of Agriculture if his attention has been called to the losses sustained by breeders of pedigree poultry in the district of Peacehaven, Sussex, during the last two years, and especially since the turning out of 30 young foxes on Telscombe Tye last autumn; and what action he proposes to take for the protection of the industry from the losses it is sustaining through the depredations of the foxes?

Mr. WILLIAM WHITELEY

My right hon. Friend has caused inquiries to be made into depredations by foxes in the Peacehaven district. My hon. Friend is no doubt aware that there has been established a joint standing committee of the National Poqltry Council and the Masters of Foxhounds Association to deal with claims for compensation in respect of losses sustained by poultry farmers through the depredations of foxes, and my right hon. Friend proposes to communicate with the joint committee upon the subject.

Mr. ALPASS

Is it not a fact that it is very difficult to get claims for loss of poultry by foxes considered at all, and that, even if they are considered, the compensation that is given is altogether inadequate?

Mr. WHITELEY

I can only say that, as stated in the last part of the answer, my right hon. Friend is getting in touch with the joint committee who have this matter in hand.

Mr. HANNON

Is it not the case that masters of hunts are only too willing to consider legitimate claims?

HON. MEMBERS

No!
