HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 cc575-6
4. Commander SOUTHBY

asked the Secretary of State for India when the Meerut conspiracy case trial is likely to be concluded; what has been the total expenditure from public funds upon this trial up to date; whether the cost of conveying witnesses from this country to India has been borne by the British Exchequer or the Government of India; how many counsel have been employed for the prosecution and how many for the defence; and what emoluments have been or will be received in connection with this trial by the Crown prosecutor?

Mr. BENN

The answer to the first part of the question is that it is hoped that the trial will conclude in April, leaving only the preparation of the judgment. To the second part, approximately seven lakhs to the end of last year. To the third part, the cost is borne from Indian Revenues. To the fourth part, at present two for the Crown and two for the defence. To the fifth part, Rs.1,020 and Rs.85 respectively per diem.

Commander SOUTHBY

Have any of the prisoners been released owing to ill-health?

Mr. BENN

There was a case of ill-health, and I think the prisoner was removed to the civil prison hospital. I should like to give a detailed reply, if the hon. and gallant Gentleman will give me notice.
