HC Deb 26 January 1931 vol 247 c610
64. Mr. W. J. BROWN

asked the Postmaster-General what cost is involved in the maintenance of the record of typists' work in operation in the Engineer-in-Chief's office; what is the need for maintaining such a record; and whether he will, in the interests of economy and efficiency, direct its substitution by the Treasury standard record?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The cost is estimated at less than £2 15s. a week. A record of this kind is necessary for the purpose of continuous supervision and adjustment of staff to work, and the forms in use in the Engineer-in-Chief's office are considered to be the best adapted to the requirements in that office.

Mr. BROWN

Why is it that this one particular section of one particular office requires a form of record so much more complicated and expensive than any existing anywhere else in the Service?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

Because in this office a great deal of the work of typing is of a difficult character, and special forms are necessary, therefore, to record it.
