HC Deb 18 February 1931 vol 248 cc1236-7
35. Mr. HORRABIN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that the commissioner of the Kavirondo province, during a visit to Songhor, endeavoured to persuade the natives of the district to accept work for private employers at a reduction in the standard rate of wages from 14s. to 12s. a month; and whether His Majesty's Government approve this action?

Dr. SHIELS

My Noble Friend has seen a report in the East African Press which indicates that the provincial commissioner of the Kavirondo Province visited Songhor in order to explain to the natives the reason for a proposed reduction in wages for farm labour; but he has no official information on the subject. The Governor of Kenya is being asked for a report, and on receipt of this I will communicate with my hon. Friend.
