HC Deb 18 February 1931 vol 248 c1242
50. Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the law that third-party insurance does not benefit any person injured by a motorist who may himself be killed in the accident, he will consider arranging with the insurance companies a different form of insurance which will embrace persons injured in the circumstances specified?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

This question was before Parliament only a few months ago, and I cannot see my way to introduce the legislative proposals which would be necessary to carry out the hon. Member's suggestion. The position was explained on the 10th April last by the Solicitor-General when the Road Traffic Bill was under consideration by Standing Committee C, and is set out in column 678 of the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

In view of the very defective state of the law and the hardships involved, does the Minister think he is justified in sitting still and doing nothing in the matter?

Mr. MORRISON

That is the only thing one can do if there is not, Parliamentary time to put it right.
