HC Deb 18 February 1931 vol 248 cc1242-3
51. Mr. MANDER

asked the Minister of Transport whether he proposes to introduce legislation to carry into effect the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Transport with regard to the setting up of public trusts to acquire and amalgamate the Cross system of canals and in other respects?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

The recommendations made in the Final Report of the Royal Commission on Transport on this and other matters are now under consideration, but I am not yet in a position to say what action it is proposed to take in regard to them.

Mr. MANDER

Will my right hon. Friend consider the question of taking the initiative in this matter by calling a conference of all the parties interested?

Mr. MORRISON

I think the hon. Member has rather exaggerated the recommendation of the Royal Commission. It was that, failing the submission of voluntary schemes, the Government should take action, and I would point out that the Grand Union Canal have recently announced that they have arranged to acquire three further canals.
