HC Deb 11 February 1931 vol 248 cc380-1
18. Mr. MACPHERSON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he is aware that it is proposed to demolish the pier at Nigg which was built by the Admiralty; and, as it is used by the Fleet when stationed in Cromarty Firth, will he take steps to have the structure, which is in goad condition, preserved?

Mr. ALEXANDER

I am not aware that it is proposed to demolish the pier at Nigg, which the Admiralty disposed of in 1925. The owner of the pier is at liberty to demolish it if he so desires, and the occasional use of it by naval recreation parties would not justify intervention by the Admiralty.

Mr. MACPHERSON

Will the right hon. Gentleman consult his advisers and see whether they would not advise him to leave this pier in existence? It is very often used by the Fleet as a whole.

Mr. ALEXANDER

The reply is given after consultation with my advisers. I know the pier myself. I have been there with the Fleet. I do not think I can vary my answer.

Mr. MACPHERSON

Is it not a fact that it is invariably used by officers and men who seek recreation?

Mr. ALEXANDER

The point is that it is not an Admiralty pier now. We have no jurisdiction, and it is not strictly necessary.

Mr. C. WILLIAMS

Has the right hon. Gentleman considered the advisability of appointing a Royal Commission?
