§ 64. Mr. MATTERSasked the Minister of Transport whether he has under consideration any proposals for the introduction of automatic signals for the regulation of road traffic in London?
§ Mr. HERBERT MORRISONIt is hoped to begin installing automatic signalling apparatus for the regulation of street traffic in Oxford Street in the near future. On the advice of the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee, proposals are also being considered for the installation of automatic signals at 11 junctions, of which I am circulating a list in the OFFICIAL REPORT. I am about to confer with the local authorities concerned on these schemes.
§ Mr. MATTERSWill these proposed installations be similar, on general lines, to that now worked at Ludgate Circus, and will they be operated by more or less the same method?
§ Mr. MORRISONNo, they will not be quite the same as the installation at Ludgate Circus. There will be three-way signal lights visible in three directions, to enable pedestrians to have one signal in view in whichever direction they cross.
§ Mr. EVERARDWill the installations be of British manufacture?
§ Mr. MORRISONI have already explained to the House my difficulty with regard to the Oxford Street installation, but, with regard to subsequent installations, as long as I can see my way on practical grounds it is intended that the supply of the signals will be invited from British firms only.
