HC Deb 05 February 1931 vol 247 c2101
45. Lieut.-Colonel GAULT

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the national need for rigid economy, he will recommend that all ministerial and parliamentary salaries be reduced by 10 per cent.?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

I do not propose to comment on particular proposals relating to economy in advance of the discussion next week on the Vote of Censure put down by the hon. and gallant Member's leaders.

Lieut.-Colonel GAULT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this economy has been effected in Italy, and does he not think it is time that the Government should give a lead to the country in this much-needed direction?

Mr. LEES

Is the Prime Minister aware that for the last five years £20,750,000 has been paid in pensions to ex-Army officers and Navy officers, and is he prepared to reduce that sum?
