HC Deb 04 February 1931 vol 247 cc1805-6
41. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the size of the insurance certificates, 6½ inches by 2½ inches, issued to all motorists; and, seeing that he promised that these should be of a reasonable size, will he take steps to reduce their size in the near future?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

Having regard to the matter which must necessarily be included, I do not consider that an insurance certificate of the dimensions mentioned is of an unreasonable size. I did not prescribe a definite size as the insurance companies represented that duplicates for office registration of a size that would suit one company would not suit another. The importance of keeping the insurance certificate as small as conveniently possible was impressed upon them.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the shape just does not allow it to go into the pocket. It is about three-quarters of an inch too long, and will he not approach the insurance companies to see if they can reduce the size in accordance with the promise which he has made?

Mr. MORRISON

I will keep that point in mind in any future discussions that may take place.
