HC Deb 04 February 1931 vol 247 cc1795-6
22. Mr. DAY

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether any ships in His Majesty's Navy have now been fitted up with sound-film apparatus; and will he give particulars?

Mr. G. HALL

Certain sound-film apparatus has been lent to five selected ships for trial.

Mr. DAY

Can my hon. Friend say, then, how the other ships are going to fare; is it not a fact that it is almost impossible to get silent films?

Mr. HALL

Silent films will continue in those ships when it is possible to get them.

Mr. DAY

Will sound apparatus be given to the other ships?

Mr. HALL

There are all kinds of questions to be borne in mind before a decision is arrived at, such as the question of expense, but it is to be understood that the Admiralty will not meet the expenditure out of public funds.

Sir NAIRNE STEWART SANDEMAN

Are these installations lent by British firms, or are they American?

Mr. HALL

The apparatus is British in three cases, and American in two.
