asked the First Commissioner of Works the estimated cost of the erection of the new block of Government buildings it was proposed to erect on the Montagu House site; and the total annual rental paid for accommodation hired for Government staffs which it was intended to house in this new building?

The estimated cost of the erection of the new block of Government buildings, which it was proposed to erect on the site of Whitehall Gardens and Montagu House, was £2,215,000. The total annual rental at present paid for hired premises, which would be vacated on completion of the new building, is £144,062. In addition, Government property of an annual value of £22,163 would be available for disposal.
