HC Deb 28 April 1931 vol 251 c1429
19. Mr. C. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is in a position to make any further statement with regard to the Italian import duty on pilchards from this country?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

I am afraid I am not in a position to add anything to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member on 24th February.

Mr. WILLIAMS

When will the right hon. Gentleman be in a position to implement his promise?

Mr. GRAHAM

I have already informed the hon. Member that I will make a representation to the Italian Government on the subject whenever there is what appears to be a favourable opportunity, but that time has not yet come.

Major COLFOX

Have the Government done nothing whatever?

Mr. GRAHAM

That is not the case. I have already given the hon. Member the information that these pilchards have haunted us for about 18 months.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Will the right hon. Gentleman try to make an opportunity by giving an opening?
