HC Deb 16 April 1931 vol 251 cc336-7
19. Mr. B. GARDNER

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is now able to make any statement as to the appointment of a chief or staff inspector of art under the Board?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

Yes, Sir. Professor E. M. Dickey, Professor of Fine Art and Director of the King Edward VII School of Art, Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, has been appointed Staff Inspector for Art, to advise the Board generally on all matters relating to art education.

Mr. McSHANE

Was this post publicly advertised?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

We advertised the post in 1924, and we have not been able to get a suitable applicant. As a result of that, the Board approached persons who were thought to be suitable.

Mr. McSHANE

Surely it should be the policy in a case like this to advertise publicly, as it has not been done since 1924.
