HC Deb 27 November 1930 vol 245 cc1470-1
45. Mr. ERNEST BROWN

asked the Prime Minister if he has any statement to make with reference to the proposed Royal Commission of Inquiry into Unemployment Insurance; and, if so, whether he can state the terms of reference, together with the proposed membership and the date on which it is proposed it shall commence its labours?

51. Sir ASSHETON POWNALL

asked the Prime Minister when it is expected the Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance will be set up?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Philip Snowden)

I much regret that I am not yet in a position to make an announcement, but the matter is being pressed forward and the Prime Minister hopes to be able to do so at an early date.

Mr. BROWN

Shall we have the information in time for the debate? If I put a question down early next week, may I expect an answer?

Mr. SNOWDEN

We very much hope so. We are pressing the matter forward with all the speed possible, but the hon. Member must realise that where you have to deal with the constitution of a Royal Commission it is not always possible to avoid some delay.

Viscountess ASTOR

Is not the Royal Commission just a way—

Mr. SPEAKER

Sir John Ferguson.
