57. Duchess of ATHOLLasked the President of the Board of Education, with regard to the proposal of the German and the Prussian Governments for the raising of the compulsory age for school attendance to 15, whether this proposal is accompanied by a proposal to give maintenance allowances; and, if so, what are the conditions on which these are to be given?
§ Sir C. TREVELYANI understand that the proposal, to which the Noble Lady refers, has not at present passed beyond the stage of a suggestion put forward by the Prussian Government to the Government of the Reich. I am informed that it has been suggested that maintenance allowances should be given, but at this preliminary stage it is not possible to say what conditions would be attached.
