HC Deb 27 November 1930 vol 245 cc1667-8

Order for Second Reading read.

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That the Bill be now read a Second time."—[Mr. Pethick-Lawrence.]

Sir HILTON YOUNG

There is one question which the Second Reading of this Bill gives one the opportunity of asking and that is with regard to the procedure by Select Committee for deciding what Bills are to continue to be included in the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill and what Bills are to drop. I do not know whether we can be told when the last Select Committee met. Perhaps the Financial Secretary to the Treasury can tell us when the next sitting is due and whether a sitting has taken place this year.

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Pethick-Lawrence)

The last Select Committee was in 1928. It would be quite contrary to the practice hitherto followed for there to be a Select Committee this year with regard to this Bill.

Sir H. YOUNG

What is the period?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

Hitherto it has been every three years.

Bill committed to a Committee of the Whole House for Monday next.—[Mr. Parkinson.]
