HC Deb 17 November 1930 vol 245 c22
38. Mr. DOUGLAS HACKING

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department the total number of overseas importers involved in the present liability of the Government under the Export Credits Scheme?

Mr. GILLETT

To give the figure for which the right hon. Gentleman has asked would involve more work than I feel justified in asking the Department to undertake, but I may say that the total number of importers whose credit the Department has undertaken to guarantee since the Export Credits Guarantee Scheme began in July, 1926, is approximately 10,000.

Mr. HACKING

Will the hon. Member bear in mind the fact that something over 9,000 share half of this risk with the Government, whereas the whole of the other half is borne by one country only —namely, the Russian Government.

Mr. GILLETT

I will bear the matter in mind.

Mr. R. A. TAYLOR

May I ask if there have been any losses in connection with the guarantees given for the purposes of Russian trade? Is it not a fact that they have all been with other countries?

Mr. GILLETT

None with Russia.

Mr. HACKING

Is it not the case that if there was one loss with Russia it would mean the whole lot going?
