HC Deb 29 May 1930 vol 239 cc1470-1
40. Miss LEE

asked the President of the Board of Education the amount paid in fees for secondary education and the cost that would be involved in making such education free to all children at present in secondary schools?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

It is estimated that in all the grant-aided secondary schools in England and Wales the amount received in tuition fees from parents and guardians is, approximately, £3,000,000 per anum. If tuition fees were abolished in all such schools, this amount would need to be replaced in the main from public funds.

41. Miss LEE

asked the President of the Board of Education the number and percentage of secondary school children in England and Wales who receive free education?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

On 31st March, 1929, the number of free pupils in grant-aided secondary schools in England and Wales was 169,254, being 43.7 per cent. of the total number of pupils in such schools.

Miss LEE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are 80 per cent. of free places in Scottish secondary education schools?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

I have no doubt in course of time England will rival Scotland.
