HC Deb 26 May 1930 vol 239 cc779-80
1. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can give the approximate number of casualties suffered by officials, police and members of the armed forces of the Crown in India during the present disturbances?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn)

I hope to have figures shortly which will place Erne in possession of this information.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Will my right hon. Friend inform me when he has received this information?

Mr. BENN

Yes, or perhaps my hon. and gallant Friend will kindly put a question on the Paper.

2. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can give the approximate number of persons who have been arrested and remain in custody during the present disturbances and between the most convenient dates?

Mr. BENN

No, Sir; as I informed my hon. Friend the Member for Ponty-pridd (Mr. Mardy Jones) on 19th May, I am not at present in possession of this information.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Will my right hon. Friend let me know when it will be convenient for him to give an answer to this question?

Mr. BENN

Yes. In the form in which it is drafted, a precise answer to the question would be difficult, but I will give my hon. and gallant Friend all the information I can, as soon as I receive it.

Mr. ERNEST BROWN

Can this information be made available to the House?

Mr. BENN

Yes. I would suggest that my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Central Hull (Lieut.-Commander Kenworthy) should put down a question.
