asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons on the live register on 1st April, 1929, and 1st April 1930, respectively?

Miss BONDFIELD

At 31st March, 1930, there were 1,677,473 persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain as compared with 1,178,067 at 8th April, 1929.

26. Mr. HASLAM

asked the Minister of Labour what is the approximate number of persons by which the live register has been increased owing to the recent Unemployment Insurance Act?

Miss BONDFIELD

It is estimated that at 12th May, 1930, the numbers on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain included approximately 60,000 persons who had been added through the operation of the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1930.

Sir ARTHUR STEEL-MAITLAND

Does the Minister expect that the number will remain at about that figure?

No, I anticipate an increase.
